Saft signs a new multi-year LTA with EADS Astrium to power all GEO satellites
Saft has signed a new multi-year LTA (Long Term Agreement) with Astrium to supply the onboard lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery modules for every Eurostar GEO (Geosynchronous Earth Orbit) communications satellite to be built over the next years. This latest LTA renews and extends the previous agreement between Saft and Astrium that commenced in 2006. The new LTA covers the supply of the onboard battery modules, built with Saft's high-energy VES140 and VES 180 cells, for the latest version of the Eurostar GEO platform, the E3000.

Absopulse Electronics' BCP 150 Series is a rugged, industrial quality battery charger. It provides 150W total power for the output and for float charging the external battery. Standard single output float voltage options include 13.8Vdc, 27.6Vdc or 55.2Vdc. The unit accepts a 95-264Vac universal input (47-63Hz) with power factor correction to meet EN61000-3-2. Custom input and output options are available on request.
Saft lithium-ion battery system will power Argentina’s ARSAT-1 GEO communications satellite
Saft has been selected by AR-SAT SA to supply the lithiumion (Li-ion) battery system that will power ARSAT-1, the first communications satellite to be designed and integrated in Argentina. Arsat-1,the first in a series of satellites, is scheduled to be launched in 2012 and will provide coverage for Latin America.

Saft has supplied Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) integrated traction battery systems to Siemens Mobility for use in the development of a new generation of trams equipped with the Sitras HES hybrid energy storage system. The first tram with Sitras HES, equipped a Saft battery system onboard, has completed more than one year of successful passenger service trials in Portugal with the Siemens Mobility customer MTS (Metro Transportes do Sul, S.A.), Since the end of 2008, it has been operating services between Almada and Seixal, two cities to the south of Lisbon.
Saft Li-ion batteries move into telecom market in outdoor BTS cabinets for Latin American Tetrapol network
Saft is now supplying its Intensium 3 high performance, maintenance free lithiumion (Li-ion) batteries for a telecom BTS (Base Transceiver Station) power backup application. b+w Electronic Systems, the German system integrator, has used Saft's high energy Intensium 3 rackmount Li-ion battery system to create a new generation, passively-cooled, outdoor cabinet that delivers increased reliability and substantial power savings in even the most demanding operational conditions. EADS Defence & Security is currently deploying the b+w outdoor cabinets in a project to expand the Tetrapol digital radio communication network used by security forces in Latin America.

The BV-1632 and BV-1632-G are particularly suitable for single board computers with tight space constraints. MPD is introducing P/N BK-53, a surface mounting AA battery clip. Using two spring arms to capture and hold a AA battery in place. These arms make it very easy to insert and remove a AA battery because of the excellent access afforded. Normally used in pairs the clips are a very low cost yet effective method of adding a battery to a pcb.

Memory Protection Devices introduces part number BK-6089 for holding 6 AA batteries. Offering 9 volts output with 6 AA alkaline batteries in series and 7.2 volts with rechargeable batteries. The sliding cover has one large snap locking tab on the front and two small tabs at the rear. Allowing for quick battery changes without the use of tools and is dependable to keep the cover in place. Reverse battery protection is built in and clear markings for battery direction are provided.

Bergstrom Inc. and Johnson Controls-Saft today announced the development of a lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery for NITE no-idle systems that will improve power efficiency, result in longer run times and enhance the environmental benefits of its no-idle units. There are several key benefits of the Li-Ion battery. At only 110 lbs, the Li-ion battery weighs 63 percent less than the traditional battery option. In addition, the Li-ion battery provides 16 percent more power, has 20 percent less volume, and boasts an estimated lifespan of six to eight years.
Saft wins multi-million order from Boeing for satellite Li-ion batteries
Saft has received a multi-million order from The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] to deliver high-performance lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for the first order for Boeing's 702B series satellite, a medium-level power satellite with six to 12kW of on-board power. The order is the first under Saft's five-year long-term agreement with Boeing, announced last year.

Darim selects Saft Li-ion batteries to power its PVE – a portable video encoder/streamer for emergency response teams
Saft recently delivered an order of MP 176065 rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to Darim Vision for the PVE400 portable video encoder/streamer. The batteries will power a camera and encoder for up to five hours of continuous field operation as it wirelessly transmits real-time video footage from individual points of view in the field. PVE400 cameras are typically used by critical and emergency response teams such as fire companies and emergency management agencies as well as the military; therefore they demand high performance, light-weight rechargeable batteries that perform well in harsh environments. The batteries can be easily changed in the field to maintain complete portability of the camera, even with such a high ruggedness rating.

A123Systems announced today that it was awarded a $249 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative. Under the terms of the $249 million grant, A123 will be required to match the funds over time as they are used. This grant is an important part of A123's U.S. manufacturing strategy, which also includes an application for a loan from the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. The grant will be used to help implement A123's strategy for the construction of world-class lithium ion battery manufacturing facilities in the United States, with the first construction location in Livonia, Michigan.

MPD introduces its new part number BC2032-E2, a battery holder for CR2032 cells. This holder also accepts one BR2032 battery and is suitable for consumer or industrial products. BC2032-E2 has large nickel plated stainless steel pressure contacts with pc pins tails that are unequal in size so the holder is polarity protected to the PCB against insertion errors.

Saft has supplied onboard battery systems based on its specialized MATRICS MRX railway batteries for 55 light rail vehicles currently being upgraded for the Port Authority of Allegheny County light rail system in Pennsylvania, US. Saft lithium-ion technology launches with MEASAT-3a communications satellite
Built by Orbital Sciences Corporation and powered by Saft's proven lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology, the MEASAT-3a successfully launched into space on Monday, 22 June 2009 from a Land Launch rocket at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan launch site. The MEASAT-3a contained two of Saft's VES 140 batteries on-board, for a total of 72 VES 140 cells. This launch makes a total of 33 spacecraft in orbit today using Saft Li-ion battery technology.
U.S. Army awards Saft $3.2 million increase on contract for high-power lithium-ion technology
The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research Development Engineering Command (TARDEC) is awarding Saft an additional $3.2 million, building on the $17 million contract it signed with the battery manufacturer in 2004. The new contract enables Saft to increase the production capability of its very high power (VHP) lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology under TARDEC's Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) program.
