10G copper interconnects top 30 metres

10Gbps rack-to-rack copper interconnects of up to 30 metres have been demonstrated by UK chip-maker Phyworks, using technology it originally developed for the optical module market. The equalisation and clock and data recovery (CDR) capabilities of its PHY2060 IC have been successfully applied to active serial copper cable assemblies which are currently being trialled by cable and connector OEMs. The complete 10G assembly achieves error free transmission at a latency of just 120ns over 30m of 24AWG twin-ax copper cable.

Designers seeking space savings by using Micro-USB interconnects are said to gain extra features, additional footprint savings and greater durability with the JAE DX4 series Micro-USB receptacles and cable assemblies. The JAE DX4 series type-B and type-AB receptacles meet all specifications of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for Micro-USB, and include enhancements to the internal design to prevent lifting of the contact. JAE Europe has enhanced its MX34 series automotive connector family to handle higher currents and to ease assembly. It has also embarked on testing for qualification to the USCAR standard. The MX34 current rating has been increased more than 200% to 10A per way dependent on derating curve* and the maximum operating temperature range has also risen, to 105ºC. Tekdata Interconnect is claiming a breakthrough in the design and manufacturing of medical interconnections by developing a new set of medical connectors designed around a two-pin block as the core of a flexible and modular interconnect system. Operators can quickly configure connectors up to 48 channels "on the ward". The Stoke-on-Trent manufacturer is also using hygienically recyclable components, such as the moulded-bellows contact design of new connectors for conductive syringe needles used to perform invasive monitoring of internal bio-electrical signals.

PoweredUSB connection systems provide a single cable connection that supplies both the standard USB communication signals and two additional wire pairs for extra power. One of the limitations of standard USB is the amount of +5V current available to supply attached peripherals. This is sufficient for mice and keyboards, but not when the power requirements exceed 500mA.
