Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3890/-1, a high voltage dual output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller that draws only 50µA when one output is active and 60µA when both outputs are enabled. I2C Battery Gas Gauges for Single Li-Ion Cells Offers 1% Accuracy
Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC2941/LTC2942 battery gas gauges with an I2C interface for 2.7V to 5.5V systems. Unlike most coulomb counters that infer charge by sampling the current and integrating digitally, the LTC2941/LTC2942 use a continuous-time analog integrator to measure charge directly, resulting in minimal offset and gain error and better overall charge accuracy. The LTC2941 measures the charge flowing in and out of a battery to within 1% accuracy at room temperature. The LTC2942 does the same while also incorporating a 14-bit No Latency Δ∑ ADC to measure battery voltage and die temperature to within 1.3% and ±5°C accuracy, respectively.

MAX16067/68: 6-channel system managers with nonvolatile fault memory facilitate diagnostics
Maxim introduced the MAX16067/MAX16068, flash-configurable sequencers/monitors that simplify power management and fault diagnostics. These devices integrate a ±1%-accurate ADC for voltage monitoring/sequencing in complex systems where high reliability is critical. Linear Technology Corporation announces the LT3032, a dual, low noise, positive/negative low dropout voltage linear regulator. The device delivers up to ±150mA continuous output current on each channel with a 300mV dropout voltage at full load. The LT3032 features a wide input voltage range of ±2.3V to ±20V, delivering adjustable output voltages from ±1.22V to ±20V. A single capacitor provides ultralow noise operation only 20µVRMS across a wide bandwidth of 10Hz to 100kHz for the positive output rail, and only 30µVRMS for the negative rail. The LT3032's output voltage tolerance is highly accurate at ±3% over line, load and temperature. The device's wide input and output voltage ranges, fast transient response and low quiescent current of 30µA per channel (operating) and <3µA in shutdown (total) make it an excellent choice for portable battery-powered systems that require optimum run time, and for use in bipolar op amp/instrumentation power supply and low noise supply applications.

MAX8896: Dual buck converter powers the WCDMA PA and RF transceiver to extend battery life in 3G handsets
Maxim introduced the MAX8896, a dual step-down converter designed for powering WCDMA/NCDMA PA (power amplifier) modules and RF transceivers. This 4mm2 device integrates a high-efficiency, PA step-down converter that is optimized for medium- and low-power transmission, and includes a bypass FET for powering the PA directly from the battery during high-power transmission. By using the MAX8896 between the battery and RF-transceiver/PA, designers can reduce current consumption by up to 50% under typical operating conditions, thus extending battery life.

Linear Technology has announced the LT3070, a digitally programmable linear regulator with the lowest dropout voltage, lowest noise and fastest transient response of any monolithic 5A LDO currently available. Dropout voltage at 5A is an ultralow 85mV. Output voltage noise at 5A is only 25uVRMS over a 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth. The LT3070's 1MHz unity gain bandwidth, coupled with its minimum 15uF ceramic output capacitance, provides a mere 30mV of overshoot/undershoot in response to a fast 4.5A output load step, saving significant bulk capacitance, space and cost.

Maxim introduced the MAX16914/MAX16915 overvoltage-protection controllers for automotive and industrial systems that must tolerate high-voltage transient and fault conditions. These devices employ a unique architecture that senses the input and output voltages of two back-to-back p-channel MOSFETs to provide overvoltage protection with ideal-diode characteristics. The SCM1110MF inverter power module (IPM) consists of all of the necessary power elements needed to configure the main circuit of an inverter as a high-side drive power supply: six IGBTs, three pre-drive ICs and six flyback diodes, as well as a bootstrap circuit (three bootstrap diodes and three boot resistors). This enables the main circuit of the inverter to be configured with fewer external components than traditional designs.

LT3582 - Boost & Inverting DC/DC Converter for Active Matrix OLED & CCD Bias
Linear Technology has announced the LT3582, LT3582-5 and LT3582-12 dual channel DC/DC converters which deliver both positive and negative outputs required in many biasing applications such as active matrix OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays as well as CCD (charge coupled device) applications. The LT3582/-5/-12 offer an I2C interface that can dynamically program output voltages, power sequencing and output voltage ramps as the application requires. Alternatively, these parameters can be set in manufacturing and made permanent via the built in non-volatile OTP (one time programmable) memory. The LT3582's positive output voltage can be set between 3.2V and 12.775 in 25mV steps, whereas the negative output can be set between -1.2V and -13.95V in 50mV steps. The LT3582-5 and LT3582-12 are preconfigured with ±5V and ±12V outputs respectively, useful in many signal conditioning applications.

SEMIKRON has introduced a low-inductance 1200V SEMITRANS IGBT module series for use in AC/DC converters in the 20 – 300kW power range. These modules are available with Fuji fifth-generation V-IGBT chips as an alternative to IGBT4 chips. Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe today announced a new two-channel DC/DC converter IC with fast transient response times, for use in digital products, such as LCD TVs, and digital video recorders. The MB39A145 utilises a 'bottom detection comparator method', and includes new comparator circuits that provide changes in voltage for changes in current to realise a more stable, low ripple output voltage. This improved stability subsequently reduces the number of external components that are needed, such as condensers, thus reducing space. The IC also includes Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) that operates in currents below 100mA, enabling the IC to provide high efficiency in all current ranges and reduce the power consumption of end equipment in stand-by mode.

The TPS386000, TPS386020, TPS386040, and TPS386060 supervisors can monitor four power rails that are greater than 0.4 V with a threshold accuracy of 0.25 percent. Mitsubishi has introduced the MGF4921AM, a low noise GaAs HEMT (High Electron Mobility Transistor) that is highly suitable for low noise amplifiers in satellite digital radio receivers as well as in DBS (direct broadcast satellite) receivers operating in the C band. Maxim has introduced the MAX11080, a high-voltage, 12-channel battery-protection IC for high-cell-count lithium-ion (Li+) battery stacks. The first stackable fault monitor on the market, this device provides redundant cell monitoring to prevent Li+ batteries from exploding (thermal runaway). Up to 31 MAX11080s can be daisy-chained together to monitor as many as 372 cells. This capability prevents cascading electrical failures and eliminates the expensive isolation components required by discrete solutions. In a typical hybrid car, Maxim's solution reduces the cost of the battery-management system (BMS) by up to 80%.

Linear Technology has announced the LT3495/-1 low noise boost converters with integrated power switches, Schottky diodes and output disconnect circuitry. TrenchFET Power MOSFET in MICRO FOOT Chipscale Package
Vishay has released what it says is the industry's first TrenchFET power MOSFET in the chipscale MICRO FOOT package to feature backside insulation. The Si8422DB is optimized for power amplifier, battery, and load switching in portable devices such as cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, MP3 players, and smart phones. The 2-mil backside coating of the device insulates the top of the MICRO FOOT package to electrical shorts from being created by temporary contact with moving parts in portable devices.

Linear Technology has announced the LT3755, a 60V, high-side current sense DC/DC converter designed to drive high current LEDs. Its 4.5V to 40V input voltage range makes it ideal for a wide variety of applications, including automotive, industrial and architectural lighting. The LT3755 uses an external N-channel MOSFET and can drive up to 14 1A white LEDs from a nominal 12V input, delivering in excess of 50 watts. It incorporates a high-side current sense, enabling it to be used in boost, buck, buck-boost or SEPIC and flyback topologies. The LT3755 can deliver efficiencies of over 94% in boost mode, eliminating any need for external heat sinking. A frequency adjust pin permits the user to program the frequency between 100kHz and 1MHz, optimizing efficiency while minimizing external component size and cost. 48V Buck Mode LED Driver Powers Ten 50mA LEDs
Linear Technology has announced the LT3590, a 48V, buck mode DC/DC converter designed to operate as a constant-current LED driver. An internal 55V, 80mA switch and Schottky diode enable it to drive up to ten 50mA LEDs in a single series string from a 48V input, making it ideal for industrial and LED signage applications.

Automotive-grade high-brightness constant-current LED driver IC
The new A6260 from Allegro MicroSystems Europe is a high-brightness constant-current LED driver IC which is designed to operate over the typical automotive voltage and temperature ranges. The input voltage range of the A6260 is specified down to 6 V, and the device will operate at up to 40 V. The linear constant-current output can be adjusted to deliver up to 350 mA in a typical application.

TI introduces tiny USB power management switches with adjustable current limit
Texas Instruments Incorporated introduced today power distribution switches with an integrated FET that can be set to support a 100-mA to 1.1-A current limit range for a standard USB port or other applications requiring a current limited switch. The power management integrated circuit (IC) efficiently protects an input voltage supply against potential short-circuit conditions that may occur when using a USB connection in a mobile phone, notebook computer, LCD TV, set-top box, gaming system or IP phone.

TI introduces precision power operational amplifier for high-voltage applications
Texas Instruments Incorporated today introduced a precision power operational amplifier which operates on supplies up to 100V and delivers a high output current of ±50mA with a 150mA short circuit limit. The driving force for the OPA454 design was high-voltage test equipment, which requires a combination of high voltage with high DC accuracy and significant speed. Hence, the OPA454 is an attractive option for a wide range of precision op amp applications, including optical communications, industrial control, data acquisition and power supplies and regulators.

24V Input Synchronous Step-Down Regulator Delivers 12A from a 9mm x 9mm QFN
Linear Technology has announced the LTC3610, a high efficiency, synchronous buck regulator which can deliver up to 12A of continuous output current at voltages as low as 0.6V. It operates from an input voltage of 4V to 24V (28V ABS Max), making it ideal for applications with multicell Li-Ion, lead acid batteries or fixed voltage rails up to 24V. Its valley current control architecture delivers very low duty cycle operation at high frequencies with excellent transient response. The operating frequency is set by an external resistor. Switching frequencies of up to 1 MHz allow the utilization of small, low cost ceramic capacitors and low profile inductors.

Linear Technology has announced the LT3500, a 2A, 36V step-down switching regulator and a linear controller in a 3mm x 3mm DFN package. The LT1938 operates within a VIN range of 3.6V to 25V, making it ideal for 12V and unregulated wall transformer inputs. Its 3.1A internal switch can deliver up to 2.2A of continuous output current at voltages as low as 1.265V.

Linear Technology has announced the LTC3520, a dual channel, 2MHz synchronous converter. One channel utilizes a synchronous buck-boost topology which can deliver up to 1A of continuous output current with inputs above, equal, or below the output. In single cell Li-Ion applications requiring a 3.3V output, the buck-boost topology can enable over 25% longer battery run-times compared to a standard buck converter.

16-Channel LED Driver Offers 5000:1 True Color PWM Dimming
Linear Technology has announced the LT3595, a 45V 2MHz DC/DC buck mode converter designed to operate as a 16-channel constant current LED driver. Each channel of the LT3595 can drive up to ten 50mA LEDs in series, enabling the LT3595 to drive up to 160 50mA LEDs while delivering efficiencies up to 92%. Its multichannel capability makes it ideal for large TFT-LCD backlighting applications. Each of the 16 channels is independently operated and can be dimmed to ratios as high as 5000:1.

White LED driver simplifies large display design for portable electronics
AnalogicTech has introduced the AAT1239-1, a high frequency, high efficiency constant current boost converter capable of driving up to10 white LEDs (WLEDs) connected in series. Catalyst Semiconductor expanded its supervisor product line with the addition of three new devices. The new CAT705, CAT706 and CAT813 voltage supervisors give designers industry-standard performance for monitoring the power supply (Vcc) status of a microprocessor, microcontroller, ASIC or other system processor. The CAT706 has a threshold voltage of 4.40V and the CAT705 and CAT813 have a threshold voltage of 4.65V.

The LT3693's switching frequency is user programmable from 200kHz to 2.4MHz, enabling the designer to optimize efficiency while avoiding critical noise-sensitive frequency bands while keeping externals small. Linear Technology has announced the LT3580, a current mode, fixed frequency step-up DC/DC converter with an internal 2A, 42V switch. It operates from an input voltage range of 2.5V to 32V, making it suitable for applications with input sources ranging from a single-cell Li-Ion to automotive inputs. The LT3580 can be configured as either a boost, SEPIC or an inverting converter. Its switching frequency can be programmed, via a single resistor or synchronized to an external clock, between 200kHz and 2.5MHz, enabling designers to minimize external component sizes and to avoid noise critical frequency bands. The combination of a 3mm x 3mm DFN package (or MSOP-8E) and tiny externals ensures a very compact footprint while minimizing solution cost.

Multiphase Step-Down DC/DC Controller with Differential Output Voltage Sensing & PLL
Linear Technology has introduced the LTC3811, a dual output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller with multiphase operation, differential output voltage sensing and integrated phase-lock loop (PLL) synchronization. Up to 12 phases can be paralleled and clocked out-of-phase to minimize the input and output filtering requirements for high current applications (up to 200A). The differential amplifier provides true remote output voltage sensing, enabling high accuracy regulation where IR losses occur through vias, trace runs and interconnects. Applications include high current ASIC supplies, power distribution buses, high power audio amplifiers and network servers.
